About The Baalm
The Baalm is a small, independent online magazine about balms, skincare and the quiet pleasure of taking care of your skin. We started it because we were tired of noise: endless launches, miracle claims, ten-step routines that promise everything and explain nothing. We wanted a calmer place — somewhere you could learn what actually helps your skin, in plain language, without pressure to buy anything.
Our mission
Our mission is simple: to help you build skincare that works for you, built on understanding rather than hype. Skin is not a problem to be solved; it is a part of you to be looked after. We believe most skin does better with fewer, better-chosen products — and that a good balm, used well, can do more than a shelf full of half-used jars.
What we cover
Our writing is organised around four gentle pillars:
- Lip & Body Balms — guides to textures, formats and product types, from tins and sticks to overnight masks, and how to choose between them.
- Ingredients — clear explainers on what shea butter, lanolin, ceramides, squalane and friends actually do, what the evidence says, and what remains uncertain.
- Routines — simple, realistic routines for mornings, evenings, seasons and busy lives. Nothing you need a bathroom cabinet the size of a wardrobe for.
- Sensitive Skin — careful advice for reactive, dry or easily irritated skin, with an emphasis on patch testing, patience and kindness to yourself.
How we work
We are ingredient-focused and honest about what works. When the science is strong, we say so. When it is thin, we say that too. We do not promise transformations overnight, and we avoid fear-based language about ingredients — most things are neither miracles nor poisons; they are tools, and context matters. Where a topic touches on medical conditions, we will always encourage you to speak with a doctor or dermatologist, because that is their job, not ours.
We write everything ourselves, slowly and carefully. If we ever recommend a type of product, it is because we believe the format or formulation approach is genuinely useful — not because someone paid us to say so. Any sponsored content, should it ever appear, will be clearly labelled.
Who we write for
The Baalm is for people who want simple, effective skincare. Perhaps your routine has grown complicated and you would like to pare it back. Perhaps your skin is sensitive and you need reassurance as much as information. Perhaps you simply love a good balm. Whoever you are, you are welcome here.
Make yourself comfortable. Your skin — and you — deserve a little calm.
